Late 18th-late 19th century
George Challenor Born around 1782 in the Longton area, he was by profession a "Cord Wainer" which is defined as a shoe maker who makes shoes from new leather. He married Ann Plant on the 31st of October 1803 in the Parish of St Peter ad Vincular George & Ann had some children some of which are listed there may be others not listed as some Church records are very unreadable. Throughout records you will find various differences in the spelling of people's Surnames which are obviously the same person you will find various different spellings namely because most people could not read or write and it was left to the person writing the record to spell the name for them ,it sometimes depends on which records you use.
Ann Challenor Born in 1804 was Christened in St Johns Longton on the 20th of May 1804 this may not be her actual Birthdate
William Challenor was born in 1808 in Longton Staffordshire
I first became aware of William, his wife Margaret and his father George when I was researching his brother Thomas after getting a copy of his marriage certificate where George was recorded as the father of Thomas but also the wittnesses recorded as William & Margaret Challenor at first I thought they may be brother and sister to Thomas but after a lot of searching I found a record of a William Challenor born in 1808 with a father named George Challenor, a mother named Ann and had a wife named Margaret. I was unable to find any record of Williams marriage to Margaret I only became certain they were married when I began to look at census records but that’s when things started to get confusing I found that there were records refuring to William being born in 1807 & 1808 seemingly being two different persons but both married to a woman named Margaret and both having the same mother and father I could find no birth record of William being born in 1807 but only differences in census records until I began to look carefully at the census records. I first noticed in a record in 1871 William & Margaret were both listed as born in 1808 and they had a son James aged 17 born in 1854, who married Mary Hurst in Dresden Staffs on the 21st of June 1875 James & Mary had eight Children Solomon born in 1875, Ettie born in1880, Eliza born in 1884,Annie born in 1886, William born in 1890, Edith born in 1892,Harold born in 1894 and Florance born in 1897 all were born in Longton Staffs. James their Father died in 1912 in S O T Staffs, Also in the 1871 cencus there were also three other persons boarding with William & Margaret, Arther & Mary A Allen and Eliza Walley I disregarded them. In the censis records from 1861, I found there was only a lodger named John Challinor born in Longton in 1838 staying with William & Margaret, Their son James, who at that time would have been 7 years old, was not recorded as living with his mother & father William & Margaret at their home, , but where was he? It was much later I found in the 1861 census that James then 7 was staying with what turned out to be his sister Ann Challenor born in 1829 who was then married to James Bentley and also another sister of both Ann and James, Elisa Challenor was also staying with Ann and her husband, James Bentley. Then in 1851 census records I found Ann Challenor (Bentley) and her husband James Bentley were staying at the home of William, born in 1807 & Margaret Challenor born in 1808 but in the1861census they were both born in 1807 and in the 1871census they were both born in 1808, as well as Ann and James Bentley listed at William & Margarets home in 1851Ann being their daughter and James Bentley being their son in law, also some of their other children were staying at their home ,Soloman born in 1835, John born in 1844 Mary Ann born in1848 who married Arther Allan and Eliza born in 1851who married James Walley in Stone Staffordshire on the 30th of Jan 1871 in the 1871 census James was in Hartsil S O T Staffs proberly the Hospital Eliza was staying with her Father & Mother William & Margaret at their home in 1871 it likely James died 1871 I found no records of James & Eliza having any children . Then there was another twist in the saga of William & Margaret in the 1841 census both William & Margaret were listed as being born in in 1806 and their children staying with them were Jane Born in 1829, Ann born in 1830 who married James Bentley in 1850 at Fulford Staffordshire, William born in 1832 and died in Longton Staffs in 1842, Solomon born on the 1st of Jan 1835 married Susannah Henry in 1857 , there children were, Emma Christened on the 17th of Oct 1858, Eliza Christened on the 13th of May 1860 and Mary Eve christened on the 19th of Apr 1863 and Stephen born in Longton Stoke on Trent Staffs on the 3rd of Feb 1839 died in Staffordshire in1841. Having researched all the census records from 1841,1851,1861 & 1871 I have found both William & Margaret to have been born in 1806,1807 &1808 I believe 1808 to be their birth year and I am certain that dispite the different birthdates in some cases different surname spellings that all the records refer to the same two people William & Margaret Challenor.

If you look at the Census transcript below it is of the family of Thomas & Ann Challinor From 1851 but there is strange difference the transcript above lists one of their children as Josiah aged 6 which makes his DOB 1845 whereas the transcript below, taken from a different sorce lists a child called Isaac aged 6 and again born in 1845 all the other children's names and birth dates are the same also the spelling is different above is spelt Challinor below Challenor which is the same on Thomas and Ann's marriage certificate but which one is right? The transcripts are taken from Two research sites There may two reasons for this difference one factor is that Thomas and Ann could not write on their marriage certificate they signed with an X and someone else signed for them and spelt the name Challenor the same on the Census form but as regards the change from Josiah to Isaac can only put down to an error interpting the original transcript but which is correct
